Residential Schools - assignments due ASAP
Recently completed our Residential Schools unit. We took inventory of what we knew about residential schools (who went there, who started it, what happened there, etc.). We watched several videos about Residential School survivors testimonies to hear their stories. Some were very emotional to watch/listen to (Where are the Children? & Our Stories...Our Strength). We watched a video presentation (Act One & Act Two) about Orange Shirt Day from the National Centre of Truth & Reconciliation, which was very well done. It showcased how many Indigenous Youth have been impacted by the Residential School system, even though they never went through it, and highlighted how they are healing from it. Highly recommend to watch it. Also, watched a movie called Where the Spirit Lives. Which is about one young girl's experience in a residential school (YouTube).
Student Assignment: Response Journal page (download below)
Students wrote their thoughts, feelings and questions about Residential Schools. This is just to see what students remember/know about the topic.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
During Dias de Los Muertos, families have ofrendas or shrine/altars that are dedicated to their deceased loved ones. Depending on the family, some ofrendas are quite large, up to seven levels, or smaller, about 2 or 3 levels. Ofrendas are to celebrate the lives that these people lived, not mourn their deaths and to encourage the spirits to visit their families during the celebration.
For our assignment, students will use three levels for their personal ofrenda.
Level 1 (Top level): This is where a symbol of the person’s faith is placed.
This can be a cross, a picture of a Saint, or an eagle feather.
If you do not know their faith, the person’s favorite flower or a rose can be placed here.
Level 2 (Middle level): This is the level of the deceased person.
The middle box is for the picture of the deceased person.
The other two boxes can be a picture of the person when they were younger, a picture of their childhood home or a map where they lived. Also, it can be what they liked to do as a hobby or a picture of their job.
In this section, include the name of the deceased person in the banner.
Level 3 (Lower level): This is where their favorite foods and drinks are placed.
As part of the celebration/belief of Dias de Los Muertos, it is believed that the spirits still need to eat and drink while in the spirit world and especially when they come to visit their living family.
Other items that are required on ofrendas to decorate it:
Written component:
Students will complete a small write up about their person that they have chosen.
Consider the following questions to help you. Should be in a paragraph format using full sentences and neatly done.
Can be on lined paper or typed. Can be written on the back of the project neatly.
Questions to consider to help:
Explain why you chose this person. Who is this person and who are they to you?
Explain the pictures that you chose to accompany this person (middle level pictures). Was it their hobby or job? Did they live in this area? Is their childhood home still around?
Explain the favourite food/drinks pictures (lower level pictures). Why did you pick these certain foods/drinks? Do you have memories associated with them about this person? Tell me about one of those memories.

In Mexico, the concept of death is very different than what we are used to when a loved one passes on. Funerals and graveyards are usually reserved for somber, sad feelings when a loved one dies. Yet, in Mexico during Dias de Los Muertos (Days of the Dead), family members or friends that have passed away are celebrated with food, festivities, light and laughter.
Answer the questions thoughtfully and thoroughly. Please use full sentences.
What do you think about celebrating the dead? How does it make you feel?
Do you think traditions of how our society perceives death change over time? Why do you think that way?
What part of Dias de Los Muertos do you like the most? The least?
